For those who don’t know, anu is a London based DJ, illustrator, and label manager at one of the UKs most prominent underground labels, Rhythm Section.
We first came across anu through one of her incredible, attention grabbing illustrations (see an example below and click the image for more cool art).
In addition to being a great artist, anu is also a superb selector and radio host, with regular shows on NTS, Rinse, Balami & BCR. Check out one of her amazing mixes via the picy below...
Can you tell us a little bit about your background and why you love music so much?
I grew up in Hounslow, London. I guess I was always surrounded by music growing up - my dad listens to a lot of jazz, punk, all kinds of African and classical Indian music.
When did you first get involved in Rhythm section and how has your role evolved?
I started going to Rhythm Section parties about 4 years ago, and I became a regular. I started working there just over a year ago - I started off doing a bit of everything and now I'm label manager.
We love your artwork, can you share with us one of your favourite pieces?
My favourite piece is 'It's Okay' - it's a tribute to anyone with a weak bladder. It's okay.
You’re a regular on NTS radio – is there a synergy between what you play on NTS and when your DJing?
There's definitely a synergy, but I also look at radio as an opportunity to play more ambient and chilled out music - the kind of stuff you wouldn't hear in a club.
Name 3 records that never leave your bag.
Hindi cover of Video Killed The Radio Star
Kazino - Binary
and anything by Sade...
What label should be checking out right now?
Wichelroede! (check em out below)
Favourite club and why?
Corsica Studios because the sound in Room 2 is amazing and it's one of my favourite places to play
Favourite breakfast and why?
Cold pizza because it tastes good in the morning.
Favourite DJ at the moment?
For those who want to see more of anu, she'll be playing a 3 hour set for us this Friday at our home, The Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath.
